Struck in the Greek city of Apollonia Pontika on the western Black Sea coast, the obverse features a mythical creature called a Gorgon, which was thought to ward off evil. The reverse depicts an anchor and a crawfish, reflecting the cities dependence on maritime commerce. The anchor depicted on the reverse is actually one of the first anchors of modern design rendered in Greek art.
