Ancient Persia

The Persian Empire (c.550-330 BC), also known as the Achaemenid Empire, created ancient gold and silver coins depicting the Persian Hero-King with a bow and other weapons over 2,500 years ago. The Achaemenid Empire was the largest empire at that period in ancient history, but fell to the invasion of Alexander the Great of Macedonia.

  • Mithridates II Silver Drachm NGC XF

Mithridates II ruled from 121-91 B.C. and these intricate silver drachms are much rarer than their price implies. In fact, we have never handled them before this current offering in any condition. Mithridates considered himself the "king of kings" and the Parthian empire reached its greatest during his rule. The obverse is incredibly detailed for the assigned grade and depicts a bust of Mithridates II facing left while the reverse is very finely engraved with several different letters and symbols, with the center showing Arsaces I holding a bow. These are great coins for the price and we only have a few available in Extremely Fine condition. Highly recommended and quite large in size--nearly the size of a modern-day quarter. Learn More

  • Croesus Silver Full Stater NGC Extremely Fine 4x3

This Lydian full silver stater was issued by King Croesus sometime around 560 B.C and has been preserved far better than most over the past 2,600 years. It is known to be the first true silver coinage ever issued and is very desirable as a result, particularly the largest denomination of the series, the full stater. The obverse shows an image of a lion and bull, representing strength and fertility. The reverse employs a double-incuse punch that happened when the coin was struck so long ago. The basal value for a Full Silver Stater is $5,000 so we feel the premium for this example is fully justifiable. The silver staters of Croesus were issued in six different sizes ranging from a full stater down to a tiny 1/24th stater. Coin pictured is the exact coin you will receive. Learn More
