Ancient Rome

roman coins

The span of the Roman Empire lasted from 27 BC until 500 years later with the fall of the Western Roman Empire around 476 AD. The demise was due to many factors including invading barbarians, Christianity displacing the traditional Roman religion, and a complete political collapse. Even though the western half of the empire was defeated, the Eastern Roman Empire continued on for another thousand years in the form of the Byzantine Empire.

Ancient Roman Coins are some of the most popular ancients to collect. There are hundreds of different Roman Coins and even a beginner on a modest budget can find beautiful specimens for their collection that are true works of art.

The obverse depicts a portrait facing right and the reverse shows a goddess seated on a throne. NGC has noted "edge marks" on the holder, referring to light contact marks on the edges of the coin. • Tiberius Gold Aureus NGC Choice Extremely Fine

An attractive and well-struck gold aureus issued during the reign of Emperor Tiberius of Rome. Tiberius ruled from 14-37 AD, during the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Coins issued under Tiberius are extremely desirable today and they are listed in the book, 100 Greatest Ancient coins. The obverse depicts the right facing head of Emperor Tiberius wearing a laurel crown, surrounded by the legend: “TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVTVS,” an inscription imperative to the transition of power in the early Roman Empire. This title enforces the adoption of Tiberius as Augustus’ heir. In the early months of Tiberius’ reign he deified Augustus, and established himself as the son (albeit adopted) of the deified first Roman Emperor. The reverse design depicts a female figure commonly assumed to be Livia, Tiberius’ mother. Livia is depicted as Pax, the Roman deity for peace. Learn More
