Seleucid Empire Coins

The Seleucid Empire and Dynasty was a Hellenistic state which existed from 312 BC to 63 BC.

Splintered away from the former Macedonian Empire after the death of Alexander the Great, his former generals fought gain control over parts of Alexander's former conquests. Seleucus, who had been infantry general under Alexander, fought several wars to rule Babylon. Seleucus was forced to flee as ruler of Babylon, but with the assistance of Ptolemy I, another of Alexander's former generals who ruled the Egyptian territories, was eventually able to regain power.

By 312 BC Seleucus was once again the steadfast ruler of Babylon and ruthlessly conquered most of Persia and the former eastern part of Alexander's empire.
